The high cost of studying abroad should not put an end to your dreams. Your research should also not be stopped or restricted for lack of funding, there are ways to go about it so that you get yourself a foreign degree with little or no cost, and you can also get funding for your research work. This great solution comes in form of scholarships and grants.
Scholarships and grants come from different sources. Since the Nigerian government has chosen to remain irresponsible and useless, we have no choice but to look to foreign sources. There are Scholarships sponsored by the schools themselves, others are from international organizations; others are sponsored by foreign governments and some by individuals who own non-profit organizations.
There are plethora of Scholarships and grants for different fields, with different conditions and qualifications. However the general requirements for getting a scholarship include good grades, extra-curricular activities, a good statement of purpose.
The requirements for a research grant are slightly different. Most research grants would require that you be a student of a university or a staff, you would also be required to write and submit a research proposal. This proposal is you trying to convince the board that the research topic and the result is beneficial and that you are quite capable of carrying out the research, it would also include your budgets. A typical grant proposal would include the following:
- Cover letter of Introduction
- Statement of proposal, which would include: The topic, literature review, methodology, expected results, proposed timeline for the research, statement of capability.
- Reference: The board would like to know who is supervising the research (especially for students) and what role the person would be taking…
This is not a detailed, step by step of getting a grant or scholarship, most grant and scholarship bodies have their own requirements. Grant payment and scholarship is usually bit made to the individual.
